How To Embrace Aesthetics And Stay Healthy At The Same Time

September 27, 2022

We all have goals that motivate us within our fitness journey. Think about your most recent goals. Were they internal or external health goals?

It is easy to focus on how you look and forget about your appearance when making goals for the gym. You might want a 6-pack but have never heard of the negative parts of having the shredded look of your dreams. It is easy to be forgetful of your internal health when making goals.

But why is this?

The fitness industry has significantly focused on aesthetics over general health. With social media only showing how amazing you can look with the newest HIIT training, it is easy to see how we can put our general health on the back burner. However, is it possible to make internal and external health goals that work together? Maybe even have them help each other’s progression?

Yes! In this article, we will dive right into how internal and external health goals work with each other.

Is it better to look good than feel good?

There is a point at which body fitness and low body fat can become the point that causes damage to many of our body’s systems. This can be dangerous, impacting our health and ability to function at our best. Achieving a super low body fat percentage can challenge our biological functions and can cause damage to many systems within our bodies, including the productive, digestive, circulatory, and endocrine systems. Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is essential if we want to stay safe and perform optimally.

If I knew that achieving this goal would cause dysfunction within these systems, would I continue to pursue it?

Health professionals can encourage people to make improvements to their health that also puts their aesthetic appearance as part of their fitness goals. This is perfectly acceptable, as long as other goals are also met. Just don’t lose track of the point of fitness goals and only focus on an aesthetic goal.

Before making your next fitness and health goal, here are a few points to keep in mind:

How important is this goal to you, and what is its purpose?

What is the reason you set your specific goal? Ask yourself, why this goal? What inspired you to set this goal, and what area of your life is this goal important?

Your physical appearance may be the only thing people see of you, but it is not the only thing that matters. How is your:

  • Energy level
  • Strength
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Mental focus
  • Flexibility

This list could be longer, and the beauty of this list is they also go hand to hand with looking good and any aesthetic goals.

Build a strong health baseline

Scheduling regular appointments for a comprehensive physical, blood work panel, and even a physical fitness test can help get you on the right track to maintaining your overall health. Many available programs claim to help people achieve aesthetic goals, but they may adversely affect other areas of health.

Baseline refers to the status quo or average of a person’s performance over time. It is essential to check in on your baseline throughout your program to track progress and ensure that you are reaching your fitness goals.

Are you able to maintain goals?

When creating your aesthetic goal, consider how long you plan to maintain it. Or are you dieting for an event, like a wedding, competition, reunion, summertime, etc.?

Remember that maintaining some goals can be harmful if you want to improve your aesthetics. For example, people who compete in bodybuilding competitions often put themselves through a lot of physical stress and strain, damaging their health in the long run. There are both positive and negative internal health effects that can occur during one’s competition prep program.

A body fat percentage below what is an athletic or healthy range could cause hormonal imbalances and disruptions within your nervous and muscular systems.

Say you want to maintain a low body fat percentage for an extended period. You will need to follow a consistent diet with an exercise routine. Not only can this cause a more prolonged onset of hormonal imbalances, but maintaining this low level of body fat will require the continuation of a workout and diet routine to maintain.

If you are looking to set new goals or maintain your progress, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is this healthy to maintain for my body internally?
  • Am I okay with continuing this workout and diet plan for an extended period?
  • Are the sacrifices I will make to preserve this goal important to me?

Be aware of your body’s signals and listen to what it tells you about how you’re feeling. This will help keep your goals healthy and achievable.

Don’t Worry! Aesthetics will come

Believe it or not, your appearance and aesthetics will follow when you focus on both internal and external health goals.

This might sound crazy to some.

If you take care of your body from the inside out, you may be able to achieve those strong limbs and flat tummies. Our bodies are brilliant and can work well even if we do not give them the best conditions. However, with the best conditions, you can thrive.

If you do not give your body enough food or rest, it will not be able to perform at its best. Your body will teach you a hard lesson when you starve yourself and force your way through workouts.

There is no need to complicate it. The most crucial part of achieving long-term health and fitness results is treating your body right. By learning what works best for your body type, you can start seeing results that last throughout your lifetime.

There is no doubt that aesthetic and health goals can coincide with one another. Many people view both as essential aspects of their overall well-being.

It is essential to take all aspects of your fitness goals into account when setting a program and achieving them. It will take some effort, and you’ll have to be patient, but the benefits of a healthy lifestyle will last a lifetime.
