Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are a special subclass of essential amino acids (EAAs) noted for their ability to support the body’s ability to fuel skeletal muscles, combat muscle protein breakdown, and support muscle protein synthesis.

The leader of this triumvirate of amino acids is L-Leucine -- the anabolic “trigger” of muscle growth.

Leucine is recognized as one of the most powerful stimulators of mTOR in the body, which helps “flip the switch” for muscle protein synthesis. Moreover, leucine also is known for its anti-catabolic properties due to it helping combat protein breakdown.

Isoleucine, the “weaker” brother of Leucine, is also able to stimulate mTOR, but not to the same degree as leucine. Isoleucine also helps increase glucose uptake as well as glucose utilization during high-intensity exercise.*

The final member of the BCAA trifecta is valine, which is needed for energy conversion. Valine also enhances glycogen synthesis in skeletal muscle, which helps combat catabolism (protein breakdown).

L-Taurine

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that supports athletic performance, cell volumization, and hydration due to its properties as an organic osmolyte, which is a fancy way of saying taurine helps cells absorb water.

 Taurine also supports muscle fullness by drawing more fluid into muscle cells.

 Research also indicates that taurine may:

• reduce plasma levels of the muscle damage marker creatine kinase
• decrease muscle soreness, and 
• increase strength levels following eccentric exercise 

This multifaceted amino acid is also known to possess antioxidant and cytoprotective properties as well as the formation of bile salts.
